About the event
BIEPA received a grant from MBRC for a maintenance (weeding and infill planting) project in the fenced dune area at Woorim beach south of the Surf Club after devastating erosion events in 2011. This four year project is sponsored by Healthy Land and Water, in consultation with MBRC, and administered by BIEPA with Barung Landcare as the contractor doing the work.
The project is finishing on 30th June this year. It has been rewarding to watch native grasses stabilize the dunes and trees survive despite the local wallabies! One of the best results is Freshwater Creek which had broken through the eroded dunes and is now starting to resume its original flow to the sea.
Thursday 15th June will be the last day that the Barung Landcare team will be on site, so Healthy Land and Water have invited BIEPA members involved with the project to take a walk through the dunes, meet the Barung team, and celebrate a project well done. All members of BIEPA's new Environment team are also most welcome to attend.
The Scientist taking over Susie Chapman’s role is Dr. Gabriela Shuster, Senior Scientist - Biodiversity Conservation, at Healthy Land and Water.
